U.S. Army Veteran Cpt. Devanie Shaw & Gold Star Mother Susan Scialdo visit OSC

At the Operation Soldier Care packing session on Saturday, November 2, 2013 we had two very special guests.

U.S. Army Veteran Cpt. Devanie Shaw stopped by to thank OSC volunteers personally for supporting her during her deployment from December 2008 to July 2009.  Devanie served as an Intelligence Officer in Iraq from 2008 – 2009.

As an OSC thank you to Devanie for her service we presented her with a special military service coin and a bouquet of flowers, in addition to a Prayer Shawl from the FBCN Prayer Shawl Ministry. The prayer shawl was handmade to bring comfort to her as her husband now serves in Afghanistan. Devanie expressed to the group, “It was definitely much easier for me when I was deployed than it is now being at home worrying about my husband and wondering what’s going on.”  She said she has a new appreciation for the families who have loved ones deployed.

American Gold Star Mother Susan Scialdo of Naples, FL also joined us to help out with our packing session. Susan is the very proud mother of Fallen Hero U.S. Army Staff Sgt. Marc A. Scialdo.  Marc was killed on March 11, 2013 when a UH-60 Black Hawk helicopter he was traveling in crashed in Afghanistan.

Operation Soldier Care supported Marc during his first deployment to Iraq. Care packages were shipped from November 2006 to August 2007.

Susan expressed her gratitude to volunteers for supporting her son and for everyone’s dedication to helping the troops over the years. We honored Susan with a dozen yellow roses and joined in prayer for her, the Scialdo family, and all the American Gold Star Mother’s and their families.

This truly was a special day with two very special guests!
